A Mongoose 2e design. The Athena-Class Advanced Research Ship is what a standard lab ship hopes to be when it grows up. The ship houses 72 scientists that work in pairs in up to 36 specialties in a pair of counterrotating rings to provide simulated gravity as artificial gravity might interfere with delicate experiments.
They have robotic lab assistants/research assistants and expensive, advanced computer programs to pile on the assistance to make the important breakthroughs. In order to run the massive load of programs required, it has five computers that all work together to host everything they need.
The ship is crewed by robots, though a sophont is present in each department to oversee things. There are even 32 labor droids to handle any heavy lifting. It even possesses a conscious intelligence to assist in both operating the ship and their research.
The 4 crew members and 72 researchers are cared for by robotic stewards that see they are fed, have access to the best food, and even have a gym and hot tub. Wherever this ship goes, it will be at the cutting edge of tech development and scientific research.
